At the camp, diabetes is worked on through diet, fasting and daily routine. Nobody here tells you to stop your medicine — the work is to put the body in a state where it needs less support, and that decision is taken with your own doctor.
Persistently raised blood sugar is not a failure of the body but a response by it. When the digestive system carries excess load for years without rest, cells stop answering the insulin signal the way they once did.
The camp’s view is that this is best looked at by removing the load that created it, not only by pushing a number down.
It is a slow process and it differs from person to person. The camp makes no claim that seven days ends diabetes.
Sugar and refined flour come out entirely. Meals are whole grains, green vegetables, sprouts, seasonal fruit and enough fibre. Timing is fixed — and that matters no less than quantity.
The third-day fast gives the body the interval in which it begins to draw on stored energy. Anyone on insulin or sulfonylureas fasts under the supervision of a sevadar and a doctor — and is kept out of the fast where that is the safer call.
Sugar is measured daily through the camp, so that any change rests on a reading rather than an impression.
This is the most important point on the page and it should not be said quietly. When diet changes, blood sugar can drop quickly. If the dose stays where it was, sugar can fall further than it should — and that is a risk in itself.
So your current medicines and prescriptions are collected at registration. Any change to medication is your own doctor’s decision, not the camp’s.
If you want to change something after the camp, take your camp readings to your doctor. They know your body.
Experience
These are individual experiences. Results vary from person to person.
Sugar was measured every day at the camp, so I had a reading in front of me instead of a guess. I took my reports to my doctor afterwards and we decided the next step together.

Wisdom

There is no shortage of advice on what to eat. Almost nobody talks about when — although the body answers to that more.

Fasting sits in tradition and in physiology alike. Both say the same thing — the digestive system needs an interval.

From a satsang by Param Aanand Ji — change how you see the body, and food changes by itself.
